How does it work?

VoIP vs Your Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS)

Using VoIP to make calls is no different from conversing on the phone via your POTS:
  1. Pick up the receiver and listen for a dial tone.
  2. Dial the number of the party you wish to talk to.
  3. A connection is made between your telephone and the other party's line.
The only difference between these two methods is the way your conversation travels between both phone lines. VoIP essentially retrieves analog audio signals from your phone conversations and converts it into digital data that can then be sent out to thousands of possible paths via the Internet. This process is made possible thanks to a small analog-to-digital converter called Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA).

By making Internet phone calls, you are bypassing your POTS entirely. What does that mean to you? Essentially, you make substantial savings on your local, long distance and international calls, and you avoid becoming one of thousands of people brought together onto one single dedicated line.

WINNER: VoIP ultimately is the most efficient way of making calls. It routes your telephone conversations along the least trafficked and most inexpensive lines.

Plug & Play: Get Connected to VoIP

Setting up Times Telecom Broadband Phone is fast and easy! You don't need to be technically savvy to be able to plug and play. Simply plug your telephone cable into your ATA instead of the phone jack and connect your Internet modem/router with the ATA using an Ethernet network cable. You're now ready to make VoIP calls or faxes! For more information on how to setup your ATA, please download the Installation Guide.

The diagram shown below can better illustrate a typical setup using one Internet phone line.
