The Apple 3GS has many upgrades and new features over its previous model 3G. The most important upgrade is the Speed and not the much advertised 'Video Recording" capability or the "Compass".
Faster loading and browsing is the main reason that makes the upgrade worth it - worth the extra $100.
The external look and location of buttons is almost exactly same as the 3G. It has almost same weight (slightly heavier but it goes unnoticed). The 3GS also has a an added feature - finger print resistanct coating - so it looks a bit glossier than the previous version. One of the irritating things with shiny objects - like the iPhone is that they get lot smudged by fingerprints very easily, with this new fingerprint-resistant coating, the fingerprint issue is reduced to a minimum.
Overall, its not a different experience than the iPhone 3G but some new key features make it all every penny of the extra money. iPhone 3G was the best overall smartphone available - and the 3GS continues the trend.

I don't really have to explain what iPhone 3GS looks or feels like as you most probably have held it or at least seen it. Its exactly the same as the 3G.
It still feels good to hold it. It still feels slightly heavier than it looks like. So whats different you ask?
I always wanted to record videos with my iphone 3g but it unfortunately didn't have that feature. Installing the video recording app solved the issue but it did have some bugs so I am very glad that the new iPhone comes with the video feature. I take lot of pictures with my iPhone so the improved photo quality came as a pleasant surprise too. I hope Apple continues to make these rocking gadgets that they always do!

I just got my iPhone 3GS last week. I was too apprehensive about buying the previous models as I heard a lot of negative criticism specially by the gadget gurus and tech magazines but I noticed that it really became popular within short time and thought there had to be something really good about it so I decided to buy the iPhone 3GS and all I can say is - I AM GLAD I DID.
The best part about the Apple products it that they are mostly very user friendly. For the iPhone, I did not have to jump through a lot of buttons and options to find whatever I wanted to find.
The phone didn't freeze even once for the last 7 days that I used it (quite intensely I must say). Better than some of its competitor smart phones that just restarted or shutdown without notice.
The battery life is really good considering the large screen that it has. Some friends told me that I would be good to go for 2-3 days for 1 charge but its not really that good. You can go one full day with 1 charge - as long as you are an average cell phone user. If you use it heavily, like for watching movies, playing games and other options, then it might even be empty within 8 hours.
Very savvy, but more importantly user-friendly interface. Great screen, Great apps to play around with. I have owned a bunch of smartphones including the BB Curve and few others but this has to be the best one I've tried - yet.
